San Francisco moves forward with an athletic quarterback

7. San Francisco 49ers (via DET): Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State

With three quarterbacks gone, it is time for San Francisco to land their guy. They are also in the Watson sweepstakes, but they can’t rely on a quarterback falling to them. The only chance is if Alabama football’s Mac Jones slides, but that is not a guarantee.

Because of that, they take a risk. Kyle Shannahan has yet to draft a franchise quarterback, and this is his chance to do so. Due to injuries, the 49ers are drafting higher than they expect to for a long time. If they want to solve their quarterback problems in the draft, it’s now or never.

Jimmy G is a solid quarterback, but he has a clear ceiling. His floor is higher than Trey Lance, but Lance has a high ceiling.

Lance’s athleticism jumps off the tape, but his limited starts work against him. It doesn’t help that he never played against top-level college defenses. However, his raw athleticism will help him produce until he develops as a passer.

Jimmy G can be traded or released with a minimal cap hit. That might be better for all parties. At the very least, it could put the San Francisco 49ers in a position to win.
