Alabama Football: Three sessions into spring Nick Saban provided an update on players and a coaching change.

Nick Saban provided an Alabama Football update Wednesday evening after the Crimson Tide finished its third session of the spring. Earlier in the day, it was learned tight ends and special teams assistant, Jay Graham had chosen to leave the Crimson Tide staff.

A subsequent statement from Graham said,

"I am taking time away from football to seek professional help immediately, gain a better understanding of mental health and spend time with loved ones.I hope to rebalance my life so that I am able to return to my passion of coaching …"

Saban said he and the University fully support Graham’s decision and will help him in any way possible.

An immediate adjustment has been made to the staff. Todd Watson, special assistant to Saban has become an active, field coach while a search is conducted for Graham’s replacement. Watson was on Jeremy Pruitt’s staff at Tennessee and previously coached at Troy. In a high school, coaching career at Foley, Watson coached Julio Jones and other later Crimson Tide players.

In terms of football, Saban reminded the team is a “work-in-progress.” He pointed out in addition to the new starters needed on offense, Emil Ekiyor and John Metchie missing spring will give many young players a chance to stand out. Speaking specifically about the tight end group, he acknowledged Jahleel Billingsley and Cameron Latu for doing well. He made a point about being pleased with the maturity Latu is showing. Speaking of other tight ends, Saban said Caden Clark, Major Tennison and Robbie Ouzts are slowed by injuries.

Saban spoke very highly of running back, Keilan Robinson, saying,

"Keilan Robinson is doing great. He has great speed, he’s gotten bigger and stronger. He’s a potential kickoff return for us. He’s made great progress as a running back. I’m really pleased with what he’s doing so far."

Saban also praised Brian Robinson Jr. and acknowledged the leadership being shone by the senior. He said last year, he and the staff recognized B Rob’s ability to make a bigger contribution. He added the only reason Robinson did not play more was Najee was the kind of back who got better the more he played.

More: Latu and four other Tide players have a great opportunity to work themselves into key roles.
