Alabama Football: NFL teams committing to Tide quarterbacks
By Dakota Cox
NFL teams are proving that Alabama football quarterbacks are worth committing to.
Alabama football has three quarterbacks currently in the NFL. Two of them are on rookie contracts, but their futures have been in question. Many believe that Jalen Hurts is not the guy to save the Eagles, and some hope that Miami will trade Tua for Deshaun Watson.
While speculation remains, both teams made moves that symbolize their commitments to their quarterbacks. With almost every starting-caliber quarterback off of the market, the only answer is the 2021 NFL Draft. Both the Dolphins and the Eagles traded back in the first round on Friday.
Miami traded from third overall to 12th for future first-round picks. This move was with the San Francisco 49ers, showing that they are looking to land a franchise quarterback in the draft.
Immediately after this trade, the Dolphins followed suit with a subsequent trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Dolphins are now at No. 6 overall, and the Eagles will make the twelfth pick.
Over the course of one day, both teams currently led by Alabama football quarterbacks made moves to move back in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. That shows that they find value in multiple picks and are not looking to draft a quarterback. More trades are possible, but all signs point to both Tua and Jalen staying on their current teams.
Not drafting a replacement is half of the battle. Those teams now need to draft supporting pieces to help them rebuild. For Miami, that means a skill player. They could land Alabama football’s DeVonta Smith. If not, they would also consider Ja’Marr Chase or Kyle Pitts. Penei Sewell would be the only fit besides a receiver, but many believe he will be drafted by the Bengals.
Philadelphia will be looking for a receiver, but they might also bolster the offensive line with their first pick. If not, players like Alabama football’s Patrick Surtain or Micah Parsons would make sense.
The future remains uncertain, but it appears that Alabama football fans will see at least two former quarterbacks lead franchises in the 2021 NFL season.
