Alabama football breaks record in NFL Mock Draft
13. Los Angeles Chargers: Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech
The Los Angeles Chargers were considered losers in the last draft for taking Justin Herbert so early, but it was obviously a smart decision at this point. Herbert had a great rookie season, and the Chargers appear to be ready to take the next step.
They still need a lot of work if they want to compete in the AFC West. They have solid weapons on offense, so they really need to bolster the line and improve on defense. In terms of immediate impact, Darrisaw is the best way to get better.
Darrisaw isn’t in the same tier as Sewell and Slater, but he is easily the best second-tier tackle. He has no questions about whether or not he will have to move to guard, and he has quality physical traits. He could protect Herbert’s blindside for the rest of his rookie contract, which is incredibly valuable.
There is depth at tackle, but the Chargers should make sure that they land a cornerstone player at this position. You don’t want to waste Herbert’s potential by being cheap with your offensive line. Invest in your best asset to get the best return.
If the Chargers don’t take a tackle, look for them to take Jaycee Horn instead.
