Alabama football breaks record in NFL Mock Draft 5.0

2. New York Jets: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

Everyone is comfortable with the fact that the New York Jets will take Zach Wilson, but that doesn’t make it the right pick. Wilson had no reasonable competition in 2020, so his stats are a moot point. Against Coastal Carolina, he struggled significantly.

Still, you can see why New York has fallen in love with his traits. He is mobile enough to extend plays with his legs. His arm is strong enough to make highlight plays down the field. With practically no offensive talent on the roster, the Jets need someone who can make something out of nothing. With that standard, Wilson makes some sense.

There is no doubt that New York will have growing pains with Zach Wilson. He takes stupid risks because he believes that he can make the miracle play. This will sometimes save the Jets, but it will also hurt them down the stretch. Expect some highlights and success, but also expect some rookie mistakes that make you scratch your head.

Wilson’s success will boil down to what else the Jets do to support him. He has what it takes to succeed, but he can’t do it on his own for long. If the coaching staff can succeed and the front office can add weapons around him, he might be the savior of the worst franchise in the NFL.
