4. Safety

The Crimson Tide defense will have a lot of experience in the back-end this season, but no group more experienced than the safeties. Jordan Battle will return for his junior season to lead this talented group after emerging as a starter last season.

Battle was excellent for the Alabama defense finishing third on the team in tackles a year ago with 66 total. With Battle set as one starter, the intriguing position battle going into Fall Camp is for the other starting safety spot between DeMarcco Hellams and Daniel Wright.

Hellams made the start in both of the Crimson Tide’s playoff games a year ago, which could make him the arguable favorite to start going into the season. The junior DB amassed 62 tackles for the Alabama defense a year ago, good for fourth on the team right behind Battle.

Wright on the other hand enters his redshirt senior season after spending a majority of the 2020 season as the other starting safety. Totaling 60 tackles and two INT’s a year ago, Wright played an important role for the Alabama defense a year ago, and should do the same again this year as one of the most experienced players on this Crimson Tide team.

Regardless of who Alabama could name an official starter on the depth chart going into the 2021 season, both Hellams and Wright will play a massive role alongside Battle at the safety position.
