Right before he made his NFL debut against the Washington Football Team, the Patriots finally let Jones choose his jersey number.

Once again, Jones will be wearing the No. 10. This is the same jersey number he had with Alabama football and in high school. Wearing it gave him comparisons to A.J. McCarron, but Jones elevated the expectations with his senior season.

New England has a history with backups wearing this jersey number. Jimmy Garoppolo wore No. 10 after being drafted by the Patriots. He was seen as the future for New England before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

Mac Jones will have an easier path to becoming the franchise quarterback. He is currently fighting against Cam Newton to earn the starting job. Garoppolo had to compete against Tom Brady, and his career in New England was cursed from the start.

Jones is the first quarterback that New England has taken in the first round during Bill Belichick’s tenure. It will be interesting to see how the Patriots handle the situation with a new rookie quarterback.

Damien Harris is also expected to start at running back for the Pats. Alongside the veterans, the Patriots also added Christian Barmore to provide depth to the defensive line.
