Last for consideration is the least settled position on the team – the starting Alabama Football punter. Based on the second scrimmage, James Burnip might be the starter. If not, Ty Perine is the next most likely. Big legs are good, but not enough. More is needed from a punter and so far, the Crimson Tide does not have it. There is hope that Burnip, with his extensive development kicking footballs (including American footballs), simply needs time to absorb the pressure in Tuscaloosa. That could happen quickly but it will not happen until he has played in his first football game.

The Crimson Tide might be good enough, a punter with average consistency is all that is needed. To contend for an Alabama Football repeat, the offensive line and the secondary must progress to championship levels. Both units can. Evan Neal, Emil Ekiyor Jr. and Jordan Battle are outstanding players. Several more in the two position groups can also excel. It may just take some time.

While the Crimson Tide continues to progress in the areas of concern, there is good news. No team in college football will field better groups at linebacker and running back. With some seasoning, the receivers could become nearly as good.
