On Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide returns to its home away from home, Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Alabama is undefeated at the Atlanta Stadium, going back to a win over Florida State in the season opener for the 2017 season.

The Tide’s last visit to Atlanta was for an SEC Championship game win over the Florida Gators last December. The Crimson Tide surrendered considerable yards in that game but outlasted the Gators 52-46.

Almost every Alabama Football fan knows the Crimson Tide and the Miami Hurricanes have not played since the National Championship game on January 1, 1993. The two teams have played 17 times going back to the 1941 season. The Crimson Tide has dominated the series history, with 14 wins to just three for Miami.

Are the Canes good enough to compete with the Tide?

Optimism for the Canes in 2021 comes down to three main reasons. Miami is one of the most experienced teams in college football. With D’Eriq King fully recovered from an ACL injury, the Canes return 19 starters. That should translate to an improved team, but the stat could be a bit misleading. The best win for the Canes in 2020 was over an eventual 8-3 North Carolina State. Miami’s only other win over an opponent that finished with a winning record was against 6-5 Pitt.

The second reason for Miami’s optimism is King. He is an outstanding quarterback. Given enough support, he can punish a defense but the Tide’s defensive front could overwhelm the Canes’ offensive line. If they do, the game could turn into a blowout.

The other reason Miami fans point to with optimism is Manny Diaz taking over the defensive play-calling. Diaz is a highly respected defensive mind. He will likely make the Miami ‘D’ better. But when the Canes gave up 772 yards to North Carolina in their next to last game of the 2020 season – there was a lot more wrong than the play-calling.

Where to watch Alabama and Miami

On a big weekend for college football, the Tide and the Canes are not in primetime. ABC will broadcast the game with a 2:30 PM kickoff. Calling the game for ABC will be Sean McDonough and Todd Blackledge. with sideline assistance from Todd McShay and Molly McGrath.

A sellout is expected with stadium capacity being expanded with extra seating.
