Alabama Football: Week Two SEC Power Rankings
By Ronald Evans
No. 3 Ole Miss (2-0) Predicted regular season ceiling – 9 wins
Last week Ole Miss was ranked No. 4. Beating Austin Peay, by a score of 54-17 does little to improve their resume. Lane Kiffin’s team was coasting by the fourth quarter or the beating would have been worse. Like Kentucky, Ole Miss has playmakers. Matt Corral is sensational and he has plenty of help from his receivers and running backs. Dontario Drummond might be the most underrated receiver in the SEC. Has the Ole Miss defense improved enough? It is too soon to know.
Alabama Football Falls in SEC Power Rankings
No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0) Predicted regular season ceiling – 12 wins
Last week Alabama Football was ranked No. 1. Reluctantly this ranking faces the reality the Tide’s two-game resume does not equal the Georgia Bulldogs. The win over Mercer had some high points. But the Tide’s play was inconsistent and too often undisciplined. Nick Saban didn’t sugar-coat it. His stern assessment the Tide is not ready for the Gators is not spin.
Does this mean Alabama Football is no longer a favorite to win SEC and National titles? It does not. The Alabama Crimson Tide can still become the best team in college football. It has work to do, but time to do it. Hopefully, Will Anderson Jr’s injury is not serious.
No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) Predicted regular season ceiling – 12 wins
Last week Georgia was ranked No. 2. After beating Clemson with a low-octane offense, the 56 points scored on UAB were impressive. Without quarterback J.T. Daniels available, Stetson Bennett passed for five touchdowns before giving way to Carson Beck, who threw a touchdown pass as well. Todd Monken’s offense spread the ball around with 12 different players catching passes. The Bulldogs also used six running backs. The tough Georgia defense held UAB to 165 total yards.
