Alabama football’s report card vs. Texas A&M

Running Backs: B+

Last week was filled with highs and lows at running back. Brian Robinson had a career day, and he looked like a true bell cow against the Rebels. However, Jase McClellan went down with a season-ending injury. This loss will hurt the Tide’s depth, but there are still plenty of options in the backfield. Still, there is no question that this group would be tested against the Aggies.

Expect Roydell Williams and Trey Sanders to see increased touches as the season progresses. Now that everyone knows the situation, they will get more reps in practice. That’s why we saw Williams get reps as a receiving back, and he scored Alabama football’s first touchdown of the game.

Still, the fumble by Robinson killed the momentum early in this game. You can blame Bryce Young for the handoff, but there is still some blame on Robinson. While you can blame him for that, you also have to credit his resiliency late in the game. He wore down the defensive front, which is what Alabama football needed. It wasn’t enough, but you can’t blame the running backs.

Wide Receivers: B

Heading into 2021, John Metchie was seen as the clear-cut WR1 for Alabama football. After a few games, Jameson Williams seemed to take over as the top target. After the game against Ole Miss, it felt clear that Alabama football is back to having a true dynamic duo at wide receiver.

This dynamic duo struggled in the first half with some drive-stalling drops. Both Metchie and Williams had bad drops in the first half, and you can’t do that to your young quarterback in a hostile environment.

Still, credit Williams with taking over late in this game. He made big plays that helped the Tide, but Williams specifically dominated on the drive that took the lead back for Alabama football. Williams deserved an A, but the struggles from Metchie bring down the grade.
