Alabama Football: What we learned during Tide’s bye week
By Dakota Cox
Alabama football learned a lot about their competition this week
Once the college football season began, every week became a learning experience. You can’t look at last year’s records to predict how 2021 will go. Clemson went from a CFP team to a team struggling against Florida State at home. Michigan State became a true contender in the Big Ten, and Georgia became a defensive juggernaut. For Alabama football, there is still plenty to learn despite them having the bye week.
Alabama football may be resting, but there was plenty to see this Saturday. Multiple games against ranked opponents happened, and other struggle wins happened as well. With the College Football Playoff rankings coming up, we have as much information as you could ask for at this point in the season.
With that being said, these are the top takeaways from Alabama football’s bye week.
Auburn is a legitimate threat
Alabama has struggled against the Auburn Tigers when they’ve played on the road. In the last two games at Auburn, The Tide have lost. With a new head coach, it’s safe to expect some craziness later in November.
Bo Nix was benched earlier in the season, but he has bounced back from that incident. He has what it takes to make electric plays, and his main concern is consistency. If he can string together enough jaw-dropping plays against Alabama, the Tigers may upset the Tide.
The Heisman race is getting stronger
Earlier in the year, Bryce Young was the clear frontrunner in the Heisman race. Now, it could go to any number of players. While he didn’t start the whole year, Caleb Williams’ six-touchdown performance was enough to get him in the conversation. Kenneth Walker torched the Michigan defense in a statement game.
While Matt Corral’s Heisman candidacy likely ended with a poor performance against Auburn, plenty of other contenders took his place. If Young wants to win the Heisman Trophy, he will need to step up his game in November.
Georgia is the best team in college football
At this point, we need to stop kidding ourselves. Alabama football is one of the best teams in the country, but the Bulldogs are simply better right now. Their defense is stifling, and the offense provides adequate balance. Florida’s offense was potent, and Georgia smothered them this week.
Does this mean Georgia will certainly win a national championship? Of course not. Plenty of things can happen by the time January rolls around. However, they should be seen as the best team in the eyes of every person watching college football right now.
