Alabama football struggled against the Tigers

Alabama football won, but it was one of the worst performances of the Nick Saban era. The offensive line could not stay upright, and the team had more penalties than rushing yards. Plenty of things went wrong against the LSU Tigers, but the Tide still managed to win the game.

This was the definition of a struggle win, but not everything went wrong. The defense made key stops in the second half, and the offense had some explosive plays. Drops were an issue, but Alabama’s running game is what truly kept the offense from remaining balanced. There were simply too many mistakes, and they overshadowed the bright spots from this weekend’s game.

Coming off of a bye, you never want to see a performance like this. However, there is still plenty of season left before the real tests come. Alabama walked away with a win, and that is more than some teams can say this weekend. Let’s take a look at each position group and grade them with our weekly report card.

Tight Ends: C+

Alabama football has the best tight end duo in recent memory, but they have yet to produce well together. Latu began the year off strong, and Billingsley has flashes now that he is out of the dog house. However, they have been worse in recent weeks. Drops are becoming a real issue, and they combined for one catch for 15 yards.

With Alabama’s struggles blocking, it would not be surprising to see more sets with the blocking tight ends. Right now, they are still putting Latu and Billingsley in the game to run routes. If the production does not improve, they may be replaced more often with the larger tight ends who are known for blocking more than receiving.

The potential is there, but these players need to step up for Bryce Young.
