Alabama vs. Iona Prediction Today
Thursday’s game is and isn’t a repeat of last season’s contest between the Tide and the Gaels in the NCAA Tournament. The Alabama Crimson Tide won that contest, 68-55. The reason today’s game is not a repeat is the roster turnover of the two teams. Nate Oats has almost a new starting lineup from last season. Iona coach, Rick Pitino has completely rebuilt his roster. The eight Gaels who get the most court time for Pitino are all new players.
Iona is off to a strong start this season, with a 5-0 record. The Gaels have beaten Appalachian State, Harvard, Hofstra, Liberty and North Alabama. Iona trailed by four points against Libert with a little over three minutes left. The Gaels held Liberty scoreless for the remainder of the game and won 54-50. Iona has performed well defensively early in the season, despite the new roster. Liberty struggled with Iona’s perimeter defense and shot only 20% outside the arc.
The Crimson Tide is ranked as the nation’s No. 10 team in the AP Poll rankings (tied with the Kentucky Wildcats) and No. 16 by Ken Pomeroy. Iona is ranked No. 143 by KenPom.
Nate Oats is hopeful Juwan Gary can move beyond day-to-day following an ankle injury and play against Iona.
The prediction is the 4-0 Tide will win covering the 12 point spread. Like all Pitino teams, Iona will play hard and challenge the Tide but Alabama should prevail and pull away in the second half.
