Alabama and Georgia meet for the 71st time Saturday afternoon in the Alabama Crimson Tide’s home away from home, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Crimson Tide leads the rivalry with 41 wins to Georgia’s 25. There have been four ties.
The Bulldogs have lost six straight to the Crimson Tide with Georgia’s last win coming in 2007. This will be the third meeting of the schools in an SEC Championship game.
Why Alabama Will Win
As good as the Bulldogs are, the Crimson Tide has advantages. One is Kirby Smart is not and will never be the equal of Nick Saban. The Tide has the better quarterback and better receivers, along with a better secondary. Against Auburn, the Tide had to find its reservoir of belief and determination to mount the successful comeback. Georgia has not faced such adversity this season. If it does, how the Dawgs will respond is unknown.
Why Georgia Might Win
The Bulldogs are a deserving No. 1 team and certainly the best team the Tide will face in 2021. None of Georgia’s 12 wins have been flukes. The Crimson Tide must play better than it has all season in order to win. As much as the history between the schools must weigh on Kirby Smart, it will have no impact on the Georgia players.
What Will Happen
Georgia is certainly the healthier team. The Alabama running back group was down to one scholarship running back during the Auburn game. Brian Robinson has a lower leg injury and his status for Saturday is not known. Without Robinson, Alabama has no power running back. Even with him, the Tide has not had much success on the ground in recent weeks.
The Crimson Tide might have a mental edge knowing the chances of making the Playoff field as a two-loss team are not good.
The Bulldogs may be good enough Kirby cannot screw it up.
