By Ronald Evans
Alabama Basketball has another big game Tuesday night. the Crimson Tide travels to Memphis to take on Penny Hardaway’s Tigers.
At this point of the season, the two teams are headed in opposite directions. Alabama is up to No. 6 in the AP Poll and Memphis is struggling to just win a game.
Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Memphis Odds: Spread, Over/Under
According to WynnBET, the Alabama Crimson Tide is a 3.5-point favorite. On the Moneyline, Alabama is -115 and Memphis is -105. The Over/Under is at 155 points.
With Memphis having loaded up on talent for another season, the line might reflect a belief that all that talent cannot lose a fifth straight game
Alabama vs. Memphis Prediction Today
Memphis streaked out to a 5-0 record. Suddenly the wheels fell off and in the Tigers’ last four games, they have lost to a good Iowa State team, a bad Georgia team and Ole Miss, plus a loss in a ‘buy’ game to Murray State.
After back-to-back wins over Gonzaga and Houston, the Crimson Tide is vulnerable to being emotionally flat on Tuesday night. In that sense, the contest is a bit like a trap game with a possibly less intense Tide and a talented Memphis team hungry for a win.
Even with four losses, Ken Pomeroy has the Tigers at No. 39, placing them fairly close in his rankings to Arkansas and higher than Mississippi State. If Pomeroy is correct and his algorithm often is, the game could be a tough one for the Crimson Tide.
Anfernee Hardaway is a Memphis legend for being a great player for the Tigers and in the NBA. As a coach, he is a proven recruiter. It takes more than strong recruiting and being a former great player to be a high-level coach. Hardaway has not reached that level yet. Nate Oats gives the Tide a decided advantage in the game.
Unless Memphis has a chemistry problem, a ‘backs against the wall’ mentality should drive them Tuesday night. Look for Memphis to take a lead and hold it throughout the half. If the deficit is not too great, Alabama should make a second-half comeback to win. Essential for the Crimson Tide will be better rebounding by the Tide bigs. Jaden Shackelford and J.D. Davison need more help on the boards than they got against Houston.
The prediction is Alabama Crimson Tide 79 – Memphis Tigers 76
