Is Bill O’Brien done with Alabama football?

Alabama football is used to turnover on the coaching staff. Every position has seen multiple people fill it, and some only stay for one season. Bill O’Brien could be the next offensive coordinator out the door after just one year.

O’Brien will finish the year with Alabama football, but he is scheduled to interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their head coaching position. This position became open when the Jaguars fired Urban Meyer halfway through the NFL season.

The Jaguars have been linked to multiple candidates, so they are likely doing their due diligence. Still, there is a chance that O’Brien will be the man in charge in Jacksonville shortly after the national championship.

O’Brien had success as a college coach and an NFL coach before joining Saban’s staff. He rebuilt Penn State’s program, and he carried the Houston Texans to the NFL Playoffs. The reason he failed in Houston over time was because of his inability to manage the roster. He made abysmal trades and undervalued draft picks. If Jacksonville refuses to put him in charge of the roster, he may be able to succeed as a coach.

The Jaguars have the worst record in the NFL, but the job is favorable. Outside of firing Meyer, the organization has a track record of trusting coaches and giving them time to prove themselves. They also have Trevor Lawrence, one of the top prospects in the history of the NFL Draft. If you can be the guy who taps into his potential, you’ll make millions over the next decade.

The Jaguars also have the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft if they lose this weekend. With that pick, O’Brien could draft Alabama football’s Evan Neal. He will be a franchise left tackle and could protect Lawrence’s blindside.

Next. Saban won't save Meyer's career. dark

If O’Brien doesn’t get this job, he could still apply for others in college and the NFL. We’ll see how the carousel goes, but this could easily be O’Brien’s last game with Alabama football.
