Alabama Baseball 2022 Season Preview: Catcher
By Matt Melton
Hunter Sute
The lone freshman addition to the catching position on Alabama’s roster comes from Sute, a local product from Tuscaloosa who played his high school ball at American Christian Academy.
A talented multi-sport athlete in high school, Sute is an excellent hitter from the left side of the plate who batted a career .461 during his high school career, including a phenomenal .504 with 44 RBI’s as a senior. Coming off that previously mentioned senior season that earned Sute Class 4A First-Team All-Star honors, the freshman could see time in 2022.
2022 Season Prediction: .245 AVG, .320 OBP, 380 SLG, .700 OPS, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 1 SB
Will Portera
A player who could see time both in the infield and at catcher in 2022, Portera returns to Tuscaloosa after not seeing time as a freshman a year ago.
Also a multi-sport athlete at Memphis University School (TN), Portera was a highly rated shortstop from the state of Tennessee out of high school, even starting on varsity since the eighth grade. As mentioned previously, the switch-hitting redshirt freshman could see time in the infield and at catcher this season.
2022 Season Prediction: .260 AVG, .340 OBP, 380 SLG, .720 OPS, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 3 SB
