The number of Alabama football verbal commits in the 2023 class rose to six on Sunday. Mississippi athlete, Brayson Hubbard became the latest Crimson Tide commit.

Hubbard’s story is interesting. He is a high school quarterback and baseball star. He was committed to Southern Miss to play baseball because he had no football offers.

That quickly changed when he camped in Tuscaloosa a few weeks ago and gained an offer from Nick Saban. Since the Crimson Tide offer, Mississippi State and a few Group of Five programs joined the pursuit of Hubbard.

Nick Saban reportedly projects Hubbard as a safety. He has both the size and speed to play the position at a high level. It is not known if he will also try to play baseball for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama Football has the best 2023 class

The ‘best class’ claim requires an explanation. In the 2023 class rankings calculated by the 247Sports Composite, the Crimson Tide is ranked No. 35. But the overall team ranking number is greatly impacted by how many commits there are per team. Alabama has six. Other programs have up to 21 commits. Texas Tech has a team ranking of No. 8, but the Red Raiders do not come close to having the best talent in the 2023 class.

The average, player talent rating is the key number to define the best classes. Currently, Alabama football has the No. 1 class, per average player ranking, at a calculated number of 94.60.

At the end of the recruiting cycle, both the overall team ranking total and the player average will be important. But it is the player ratings that indicate how much a team is adding potential ‘game-changer’ talent to its roster.

Check out the current, average player ratings for the top teams, and all the SEC teams below.

  • Alabama Crimson Tide – 94.60
  • Ohio State Buckeyes – 94.15
  • Georgia Bulldogs – 93.03
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish – 92.72
  • Southern Cal Trojans – 92.61
  • Texas A&M Aggies – 91.55
  • Clemson Tigers – 91.49
  • Louisville Cardinals – 91.42
  • LSU Bengal Tigers – 91.32
  • Texas Longhorns – 90.95
  • Oregon Ducks – 90.95
  • Florida State Seminoles – 90.74
  • Penn State Nittany Lions – 90.69
  • Ole Miss Rebels – 90.40
  • Auburn Tigers – 90.32
  • Tennessee Vols – 89.84
  • Florida Gators – 88.96
  • Missouri Tigers – 88.90
  • Arkansas Razorbacks – 88.72
  • South Carolina Gamecocks – 87.70
  • Kentucky Wildcats – 87.07
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs – 86.91
  • Vanderbilt Commodores – 86.07

The Auburn player average might be misleading. The Tigers have just two verbal commits. The other teams have five to 17 verbal commits.

A big Alabama Crimson Tide boost ahead?

Sunday afternoon was filled with buzz about the Tide getting a second commit for the day. Broad speculation was the next one would be ‘big’ for the class, suggesting a 5-Star recruit. Stay tuned for an announcement Sunday night or Monday.

For the record, Brayson Hubbard is rated as a 3-Star, ATH, and the No. 658 player in the 2023 class. That ranking will go up considerably with the new attention he will receive. He will likely finish as a 4-Star.
