Alabama Football: Best player on every SEC team
By Ronald Evans
What separates SEC football from the rest of the nation is the high percentage of immensely talented players. Even more than great coaches, SEC football teams win National Championships because their rosters are heavily populated with college football’s best players
Looking ahead to the 2022 season, the lists below try to identify the best player on each SEC team. Doing so is not easy on every team – on some teams it is quite easy.
SEC Football: East Division Best Players
- Georgia Bulldogs – What Brock Bowers did as a freshman is astounding. He made 13 touchdown catches from his tight end position. Overall his 56 receptions totaled 882 yards. The runner-up to Bowers is junior defensive lineman, Jalen Carter.
- Tennessee Vols – Hendon Hooker is the pick, but not far behind the talented Hooker is another gifted athlete, WR, Cedric Tillman.
- Kentucky Wildcats – Cats’ QB Will Levis would get the nod, had he thrown two or three fewer interceptions last season. By a nose, the pick is senior RB, Chris Rodriquez who should produce another big season despite a less experienced, and probably less talented offensive line.
- Florida Gators – Billy Napier will need QB Anthony Richardson to be his best player. Richardson can be explosive and the Gators will struggle without a big season from him. The runner-up is senior, LB Ventrell Miller who because of injury played in only two games last season. In the 2020 season, Miller led the Gators with 82 tackles.
- South Carolina Gamecocks – Similar to Billy Napier’s situation, Shane Beamer must have his QB, Spencer Rattler be his best player. Rattler has the arm and the accuracy to deliver. CB, Cam Smith is a solid runner-up choice, but instead, I am going with James Madison transfer WR, Antwane Wells. Rattler will give teammates abundant opportunities for receptions and Wells should be the No. 1 recipient.
- Missouri Tigers – Most of the buzz for Missouri is about elite wide receiver recruit, Luther Burden. With a solid performance from a Missouri QB, Burden, even as a freshman, might put up big numbers. Instead, the choice is PK, Harrison Mevis. Mevis made 92% of his field goal attempts last season.
- Vanderbilt Commodores – Clark Lea needs offense and his best chance comes from a healthy season by RB, Re’Mahn Davis. But Lea’s best player will be on defense and should be senior LB, Anfernee Orji.
