It takes a full menu of ingredients to build a winning football program. Alabama Football has the best of the main one, in Head Coach, Nick Saban. But even with the GOAT, it takes more. Top-class facilities are essential, as is a non-meddling booster base.  A roster with elite talent and a deep depth of quality players is another necessary ingredient. Plus there are the assistant coaches, trainers, analysts and other support staff. All of whom must perform at a high level.

Drilling deeper into the assistant coach component, the experience and skill of a team’s Coordinator combination is a valid predictor of team success.

This post provides a ranking of the SEC’s Coordinator combos for the 2022 season. The rankings are not powered by data, making them subjective. Like beauty, perceptions of the coaches are perceived in the eyes of the beholder.

Realizing, that as an Alabama football fan, my eyes may see too much Crimson, I am using the perceptions of outside sources to calculate the rankings. Those sources are Michael Bratton and Matt Hayes. Bratton recently ranked every SEC team’s Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. Matt Hayes published rankings of the top 25 Coordinators in the FBS.

Using Matt Hayes’ conclusions first, nine SEC teams had coordinators included in his pair of top 25 lists. Five of the nine had Offensive and Defensive Coordinators ranked. Four other SEC teams had just one coordinator in his top 25.
