SEC Football: Ranking the three worst SEC football teams

facebooktwitterreddit

It is not too early to talk worst 2022, SEC football teams. With one weekend of the SEC football regular season remaining, picking the SEC’s bottom three is easy.

Sure, nine SEC teams will have more football to play after Saturday. Still, there is no reason to wait another week to determine what is already obvious.

After week twelve games, there are five candidates for the bottom three. But as bad as the fourth and fifth worst teams are, the bottom three are much worse.

SEC Football Records (after CFB week 12)

SEC East

  • Georgia Bulldogs; 11-0
  • Tennessee Volunteers; 9-2
  • South Carolina Gamecocks; 7-4
  • Florida Gators; 6-5
  • Kentucky Wildcats; 6-5
  • Vanderbilt Commodores; 5-6
  • Missouri Tigers; 5-6

SEC West

  • LSU Tigers; 9-2
  • Alabama Crimson Tide; 9-2
  • Ole Miss Rebels; 8-3
  • Mississippi State Bulldogs; 7-4
  • Arkansas Razorbacks; 6-5
  • Auburn Tigers; 5-6
  • Texas A&M Aggies; 4-7

Giving no consideration for the SEC’s divisions, the three worst SEC teams in the 2022 season are, counting down from No. 14 in the SEC …

SEC Football No. 14 – Texas A&M Aggies (4-7)

In College Station on Saturday, the Aggies held off one of college football’s worst teams; beating now 1-10, UMass, 20-3. The win pushed the Aggies’ record to 4-7. Never in the history of college football has so much money been spent for such little return.

And what did it look like inside Kyle Field on Saturday?

The Aggies’ cost of putting out the fire is $85M dollars, give or take a few million.

SEC Football No. 13 – Auburn Tigers (5-6)

Auburn is in a much stronger position than Texas A&M because the Tigers football program can hire a new coach. The exit of Bryan Harsin and the impact of Cadillac Williams as the interim head coach has provided the Auburn program with new energy.

The enthusiasm does not erase the fact that Auburn has not been this bad since the 2012 season. Auburn’s best wins this season have been over Missouri, Texas A&M and Western Kentucky.

For several days, Auburn fans have been jubilant with the expectation either Lane Kiffin or Hugh Freeze will be their next head coach. Freeze’s Liberty team lost at home on Saturday to one of Virginia Tech’s worst teams in many years. Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss team was soundly beaten by Arkansas in Fayetteville.

SEC Football No. 12 – Missouri Tigers (5-6)

The Tigers dispensed with a hapless New Mexico State (NMSU) team Saturday night. The NMSU Aggies are somewhat better than their previous four seasons when they won a total of eight games. But the one-sided win by Missouri proves nothing.

One reason Missouri gets the nod over Auburn is that had an untouched Missouri running back not somehow dropped the ball, just short of what would have been a winning touchdown, Missouri would have beaten Auburn, in Auburn.

The most surprising aspect of the list of the SEC’s three worst teams is the absence of Vanderbilt. With wins in their last two games, at Kentucky and Florida in Nashville, the Commodores are the league’s best 5-6 team.
