Alabama Football: No Dan Mullen for the Crimson Tide
By Ronald Evans
Take one name out of the hopper to replace former Alabama Football OC, Bill O’Brien. According to Chris Low, Dan Mullen prefers to “concentrate on his TV career as a football analyst.”
A bandwagon theme may develop that Mullen was never a top choice for Nick Saban. And maybe he wasn’t, but he was certainly one of the top three or four names most often suggested by Crimson Tide fans.
The two primary attributes Alabama football needs in its next Offensive Coordinator are astute play-calling and what is often defined as a ‘Quarterback Whisperer.’ Dan Mullen has exhibited those skills in his coaching career. But those fans of the Crimson Tide and Dan Mullen must move on.
Where does Alabama Football turn next? Truly, only Nick Saban has that answer. Chris Low reminded everyone the Crimson Tide’s next OC will be the sixth in Tuscaloosa in the last eight seasons. Some can argue the lack of continuity has been a major problem for the Crimson Tide. Countering that is the fact Lane Kiffin, Brian Daboll, Mike Locksley, Steve Sarkisian and Bill O’Brien, either played for or won a National Championship. If there has been a penalty for lack of continuity, it has not been a large one.
Some Crimson Tide fans are not disappointed in Mullen’s decision, due to preferences for Jeff Lebby or Joe Brady. But not every Alabama football fan is sold on either guy. As I wrote earlier in you can’t always get what you want,
"In the end, Nick Saban will get a guy he wants and Alabama Football will be fine."
Best Choice for Alabama Football
I have been thinking for weeks the best choice for the Alabama Crimson Tide is Philadelphia Eagles’ Quarterback coach, Brian Johnson. No doubt he would receive strong endorsements from Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith and Landon Dickerson. Some have described Johnson as a younger and better version of Dan Mullen.
The biggest problem in hiring Johnson is some NFL team may make him an OC first. According to Brandon Lee Gowton,
"Johnson has been connected to four OC jobs (that we know of) thus far. In addition to talking to the Rams, he’s also reportedly met with the New York Jets. One report indicated that Jonathan Gannon could take Johnson as his offensive coordinator if the former lands the Houston Texans’ head coaching gig."
In my opinion, Brian Johnson would be worth the Crimson Tide throwing a huge wad of cash his way. An added benefit with Johnson is, being only 35 years old, he might be willing to work for Nick Saban until Alabama Football needs a new head coach.
Alabama football insiders are predicting Nick Saban will land his next OC soon.
