Alabama Football: Who jumped the gun on Todd Grantham?

facebooktwitterreddit

Alabama football fans are justifiably anxious that Nick Saban has not announced a replacement for Pete Golding.

Crimson Tide fans, by what appears to be near unanimous numbers, support a return of Jeremy Pruitt to his old job as Alabama’s Defensive Coordinator.

Apparently, and for reasons it is difficult to fathom, someone either wants or believes Nick Saban will hire, or has hired Todd Grantham instead.

The well-traveled Todd Grantham is employed by Alabama Football. He is a defensive analyst for Nick Saban. The NCAA is considering changing the role of analysts allowing them to coach players on the practice field. If the NCAA makes the change, Grantham will in effect, be a Crimson Tide assistant coach.

He is not now the Defensive Coordinator and if he was named at any point, many Crimson Tide fans would have their hopes for the 2023 season crushed.

Based on the bogus information about Grantham being named DC, the Wikipedia page for him should be avoided. In fairness to him, he has had a pretty solid career. There was a time when he was considered a top defensive mind.

He had good seasons at Georgia and Louisville. His last two DC gigs were with Dan Mullen at Mississippi State and Florida. Grantham’s defenses were not special in either Starkville or Gainesville.

He does have considerable college and NFL coaching experience and no doubt brings value to Nick Saban’s defensive staff. But Grantham also may be the kind of Saban reclamation project that doesn’t produce big dividends. Many fans think Grantham’s defensive schemes and play-calling styles have ceased to be effective against today’s explosive college football offenses.

UPDATE: The Wiki page has been edited to delete his designation as the Alabama DC

Another thought about the inaccurate Grantham wiki page is it is an effective way for a fan of an opposing team to rile up Crimson Tide fans. Perhaps there is some humor in that. But I doubt very many Alabama Crimson Tide fans are laughing.
