Alabama Basketball: Crimson Tide roster movement continues

Alabama Basketball got some news on Friday regarding its 2023-24 roster when guard Jahvon Quinerly, arguably Alabama’s most important “on the fence” player, made an announcement regarding his future plans.

Quinerly announced that he would be entering the NBA Draft, but left the door open for a return to school. The senior averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 assists for the Crimson Tide this season while shooting 35.7 percent from the three-point line.

He has averaged 11.7 points and 3.7 assists per game over three seasons in Tuscaloosa. His experience, as well as his ability to score and distribute the ball could give Alabama a big boost in the backcourt next season if he ultimately returns.

Alabama Basketball still awaits the decision of freshman forward Noah Clowney. Clowney has, in my opinion, the toughest and most important decision of anyone on the roster. His potential return to Tuscaloosa would mean more than Quinerly’s, just because Bama already has solid backcourt pieces presumably coming back in Mark Sears and Jaden Bradley. There is no one else on the roster that can do the things Noah Clowney can do.

He is very athletic at 6’10”, was one of the top rebounders in the SEC as a freshman, and even has some perimeter upside. Given his age, he also has a lot of room for improvement and physical development. It’s not far-fetched to think Noah Clowney could return for his sophomore year and make himself into a lottery pick.

Former Alabama guard Nimari Burnett, who announced his intention to transfer earlier this week, has committed to Juwan Howard and the Michigan Wolverines.

The move makes sense for Burnett, who is from the Midwest and was often injured throughout his time at Texas Tech and Alabama. He will be closer to home in Ann Arbor, and will join a team that is going into something of a reset mode after two disappointing years to end the Hunter Dickinson era.

Alabama Basketball fans would do well to wish Burnett the best, as he was a substantial piece of the best team in school history.
