Alabama football NFL Draft bust No. 2: Keith McCants

1990 NFL Draft, Round 1, Pick 4
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1990-1993
Houston Oilers, 1993-1994
Arizona Cardinals, 1994-1995

You couldn’t necessarily blame the Tampa Bay Bucs if they never selected another former Alabama football player in the first round again. They seem to have cornered the market in taking Crimson Tide players in the first round, only to see them never really live up to the hype.

It’s also safe to say that McCants might have been one of the “original” Alabama draft busts considering he happened so long ago. Back in his college playing days, he was a dominant figure, and he was thought to be as much of a sure-fire pick as Bryce Young is expected to be this year. That’s why he was the fourth player selected in the 1990 draft.

The Bucs thought they had managed to land a dominant defensive player who some thought might even turn into the second coming of Lawrence Taylor. It was quickly apparent that wasn’t going to be the case.

McCants played in 15 games in his rookie season but started just four. He started for the entirety of the next two seasons, but his lack of dominance saw the Bucs give up on him after just three total seasons. And once he left Tampa, his career quickly spun out. Over the next four seasons, McCants started just four games, and the number four pick saw his NFL career end after seven rather unimpressive seasons.
