Greatest Alabama football undrafted player No. 2: Wallace Gilberry
Defensive end
Kansas City Chiefs: 2008-2011
Cincinnati Bengals: 2012-2016
Detroit Lions: 2016
One of the things that made Wallace Gilberry one of the best Alabama football players to ever turn into an undrafted free agent in the NFL is that he was always defying the odds. He was just a 3-star recruit when he first joined the Tide and ended his time in Tuscaloosa with 21.5 sacks and 60.5 tackles for a loss.
Gilberry’s best season was his last with Alabama, which also happened to be Nick Saban’s first at the helm. That year, the defensive lineman recorded 80 tackles, including 27 for a loss and 10 sacks.
Gilberry first signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2008, but he was released before the season and managed to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent the next four seasons. Gilberry went on to play with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2012-15 before finishing his NFL career, splitting time with the Bengals and the Detroit Lions in 2016.
Gilberry was never someone who consistently started, but he did see plenty of action, playing in 124 games between the three teams. He’s someone who managed to do Alabama football proud during a period of time when the program was finding its footing.
