10 greatest Alabama football undrafted free agents of all time
Greatest Alabama football undrafted player: Don Hutson
Wide receiver
Green Bay Packers: 1935-1945
Those familiar with Alabama football are likely not surprised to see Don Hutson at the top of this list. After all, he is the only undrafted free agent from the Crimson Tide to make the NFL Hall of Fame. He was so good, as a matter of fact, that the facility the Green Bay Packers currently practice in is named after him.
Hutson’s career with the Packers was inauspicious, as he had just 18 catches in his rookie season. However, he led the league in receptions during his second campaign and repeated that feat seven other times, including five straight times to finish out his NFL career.
Those seasons included a 74-catch performance for 1,211 yards and 17 touchdowns in 1942. That was during an era when players did not put up those numbers. Or really come anywhere close.
Over the course of his career, Hutson amassed 488 receptions for 7,991 and 99 touchdowns. It’s not hard to understand why the player goes down in the annals as an example of the best Alabama football had to offer and the best the NFL had to offer.
