SEC Football: Auburn hopes for chance to land Irish transfer Tyler Buchner

Former Notre Dame quarterback, Tyler Buchner was in Tuscaloosa on Wednesday. There is no solid information on whether the Alabama Football program gave the transfer QB an offer. There is plenty of speculation that if an offer is made Tyler Buchner will accept it.

Alabama fans are lukewarm about Buchner. Meanwhile, over in West Georgia, Hugh Freeze is hoping to add any player from the Transfer Portal. Fly War Eagle, expertly run by Mary Kate Hughes and Andrew Hughes, provided an Auburn Portal update on Wednesday afternoon.

Reportedly, Auburn’s progress in the Transfer Portal is slower than Freeze expected. Freeze needs help in almost every Auburn position group, particularly on the offensive line. Freeze has added transfer offensive linemen who moved from East Carolina, Western Kentucky and Tulsa. They might be outstanding or they may be overwhelmed by SEC defensive fronts.

After the Auburn spring game, Hugh Freeze came close to saying Auburn needs a new starting quarterback and more dependable receivers. Returning Auburn QB, Robbie Ashford has likely been ineffective because of the offensive teammates around him. Ashford or Holden Gernier (though lacking experience) could lead the Auburn offense to some wins, but Freeze wants more than a few wins.

One measure of the quarterback situation in Auburn occurred a few weeks ago. Auburn Daily reported walk-on quarterback, Jackson Barkley appeared in contention for a key role this fall and maybe even as the starter.

A far better option than anyone in the current Auburn QB room, is Notre Dame transfer, Tyler Buchner. Auburn fans may well be poised to hit Toomer’s Corner – rolling – if Buchner leaves Tuscaloosa without an offer.

Hugh Freeze has nothing to lose by offering Buchner the starter job the moment the former Notre Dame starter sets foot on the Auburn campus. Freeze will not get a better QB out of the Portal unless, in the last four days of the current window, the Portal is flooded with top QB talent.

Tyler Buchner and Hugh Freeze Offense

If Hugh Freeze can cobble together enough good transfers to support Buchner, Auburn might be a good choice for the young man. Freeze knows how to run an offense and Buchner’s skills are well-suited to what Hugh prefers doing offensively.

Alabama football fans rarely wish the best for the Auburn Tigers. In this case, Auburn getting an upgrade at QB might not upset Alabama Crimson Tide fans.

A flip side to all of the above is Tommy Rees and Nick Saban may want Buchner in Tuscaloosa. and if they do, the rest of us should as well.
