Alabama Football: 10 greatest quarterback-receiver duos of all time
By Ronald Evans
No. 2 Alabama Quarterback-Receiver Duo
- Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith – 2020 Season
In the Crimson Tide’s magical 2020 season, after an opening win on the road at Missouri, only once did the Crimson Tide score less than 41 points. That was in a CFB Playoff semi-final against Notre Dame which the Tide so dominated 31 points was more than enough. In the National Championship game, Ohio State was bombarded by 35 first-half Crimson Tide points as Alabama cruised to a 52-24 victory.
The three prongs of the 2020 Tide offense; Mac Jones; Najee Harris and DeVonta Smith were too much for the rest of college football. Mac Jones passed for 4,500 yards, with 41 touchdown passes and just four interceptions.
In the 2020 season, DeVonta Smith set the SEC single-season record with 1,856 receiving yards, producing 23 touchdowns. Smith also holds the SEC career receiving yards record with 3,965 yards.
When they arrived in Tuscaloosa, neither Mac Jones nor DeVonta Smith appeared destined for stardom. A skinny Smith appeared too fragile to hold up to the SEC. Jones was projected to likely be a career backup. The estimation of both young men could not have been more wrong.
