No. 1 Alabama Quarterback-Receiver Duo
- Bryce Young and John Metchie III – 2021 Season
The 2021 football season ended badly for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Georgia defense was too much for Alabama in the National Championship Game. In some ways, Alabama was fortunate to have made it to the season’s final game. Without Bryce Young’s magic, the Crimson Tide would have lost early and late, to Florida and Auburn.
The 2021 Crimson Tide offense had a less-than-dominating offensive line, Young’s ability to improvise was enough for Alabama to win 13 games and an SEC Championship. It would not have happened without Bryce Young. And Young could not have done it without John Metchie III.
Bryce Young set an Alabama, single-season passing record with 4,872 yards. That mark is No. 2 all-time in SEC history. Young threw 47 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions.
Jameson Williams was No. 1 for Crimson Tide receivers with 1,572 yards. Williams could have easily been the duo choice rather than Metchie. But Metchie was tops in receptions with 96 catches, compared to 76 for Williams. Metchie’s receptions totaled 1,142 yards. None were more important than two overtime, two-point conversion catches against Auburn that in the boxscore totaled zero yards.
After missing the 2022 NFL season to battle leukemia, Metchie is expected to play for the Houston Texans in the 2023 season.

When will the next Crimson Tide QB-WR duo make a name for themselves? It could happen in 2023.
