Alabama Basketball Head Coach Nate Oats continued his hot streak on the recruiting trail with the addition of 5-star power forward Aidan Sherrell on Tuesday. Sherrell is the first commitment for Bama hoops in the 2024 cycle.

He is ranked as the no. 22 overall player and the no. 4 power forward by the 247Sports Composite. The product of Prolific Prep in Napa, California is also considered the fourth-best player in the state of California.

Aidan Sherrell is a true stretch big, the type of player with whom Oats has had a lot of success in recent years. Sherrell is expected to thrive with Alabama Basketball, as the general consensus is that he will be a natural fit in Oats’ system.

Listed at 6’10” and 215 pounds, he possesses a very long but relatively thin frame. Scouts have marveled at his skill, coordination, and athletic fluidity, which are rare for someone his height at such a young age. 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein calls Sherrell “one of the most naturally talented big men in the class with a versatile collection of tools.”

Aidan Sherrell is already receiving comparisons to Noah Clowney, who was a one-and-done player for Alabama Basketball last season and was selected by the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft. Clowney, a former 4-star recruit out of South Carolina, was not as highly ranked as Sherrell coming out of high school. Still, he showed excellent development in his year in Tuscaloosa.

On what was arguably Bama’s best hoops team ever, Clowney played in 36 of 37 games, starting every one. He was a standout for the Crimson Tide, averaging just under 10 points and 8 rebounds per game en route to being named an All-SEC Freshman performer.

Clowney was a versatile frontcourt weapon that blocked 33 shots and hit 33 three-point field goals in his lone season for Alabama Basketball. Aidan Sherrell has a similar skill set and could make a similar contribution when he gets on campus next year.

Transfer addition Grant Nelson is another skilled big in the mold of Clowney and Sherrell that is expected to fill that role this season for Bama Hoops.

Coach Oats and Alabama Basketball are still in the hunt for some elite 2024 prospects, including 5-star guard Tre Johnson, 4-star guards Boogie Fland and Jase Richardson, and 5-star forward Asa Newell.

It looks like Oats will once again bring in a stellar recruiting haul, and the addition of Aidan Sherrell is a huge pickup to kick things off.
