Alabama Football: End of regular season wrap up
Texas A&M Coaching Chaos and Mississippi State finds its head coach
Late Saturday night news broke on two SEC West Rivals filling their head coaching vacancies while an SEC East team had their coach poached. The news on Texas A&M hiring Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops to fill the role that opened up with the firing of Jimbo Fisher. The move was shocking. To be honest the hiring is very unimpressive, especially for Texas A&M.
Then the news broke via Matt Jones of KY Sports Radio that Mark Stoops was staying at Kentucky. Stoops would later announce himself that he was not leaving for the conference rival. The events that unfolded were shocking and sent a massive ripple through College Station. The coaching search will continue with Jedd Fisch of Arizona and Mike Elko of Duke being the most likely names. The name I’d look at if I were Texas A&M is Michigan OC Sherrone Moore, Moore has filled in nicely in Jim Harbaugh’s absence leading the Wolverines to impressive wins over Penn State and Ohio State.
This could have a massive effect on recruiting for Alabama football and other SEC programs. Texas A&M’s former top-ranked recruiting class is entering its junior season and many of the players may look to transfer to schools to improve NFL Draft stock. The main name to watch on the transfer front is Evan Stewart. Alabama was a finalist for Stewart in his initial recruitment and it’s been speculated that he’s going to transfer with Alabama being a favorite according to On3’s Gerry Hamilton. Fuel was poured on the fire following the Iron Bowl when Stewart reposted the Isaiah Bond catch to his Instagram story.
Mississippi State found its newest head coach in Oklahoma Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby. The hire is a decent hire for the Bulldogs who struggled this season without Mike Leech. Lebby has an impressive coaching background with Jobs at Baylor, UCF, Ole Miss, and lately Oklahoma. The reaction from the Mississippi state community is mixed as while Lenny is a great coach he has a shadowed past. While at Baylor Lebby was one of the coaches accused of not taking action in the Art Briles sexual assault scandal. Lenny also sold shirts in support of Art Briles which has caused concern amongst the Bulldog faithful.
The Kentucky Wildcats have to be confused but, pleased with this weekend’s results. They beat their rival in Louisville then kept their head coach in Mark Stoops. Whether Stoops told A&M no or vice versa shouldn’t matter one of the top programs in the country came to poach your coach and you were able to keep him. Entering a new era of the SEC where Texas and Oklahoma are joining the conference keeping a coach like Stoops is vital for the Kentucky program. The Wildcats currently boast a Top 25 recruiting class in the country.
