Kalen DeBoer mentioned at SEC Media Days that Alabama won't have the need to play as many freshmen in 2026 as it did in his first two seasons as the Crimson Tide's head coach. There's more quality depth across the board now, and the Crimson Tide took a bigger Transfer Portal class than they did in DeBoer's first offseason.
But there are still opportunities for some freshmen to earn roles, and there's a major influx of talent from Alabama's 2026 recruiting class, which ranked among the top five nationally.
With fall camp starting next week, let's take a look at five freshmen with the best chance of earning immediate playing time.

5. S Jireh Edwards
In terms of being physically ready to play, there's no Alabama freshman more ready to go than 5-star safety Jireh Edwards. He looks like a college veteran already.
Edwards is an impressive talent. His problem with getting on the field defensively comes strictly from how ridiculously deep Alabama's secondary is. Both of the Tide's starting safeties - Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb - return from last season, and Ivan Taylor, Zay Mincey, and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. are quality backups with experience.
Edwards can help this team, though, especially with his physicality. He'll have a big role on special teams, and even with the talent ahead of him, he could force his way onto the field.
4. LB Xavier Griffin
Xavier Griffin has hit the ground running in Tuscaloosa since enrolling early. He's worked to add the necessary weight to his frame to withstand the wear and tear of a college football season. Griffin was one of the headliners of Alabama's 2026 class, and he'll have a chance to play a role for the Crimson Tide this season.
Griffin projects to play a similar role to Jihaad Campbell down the line for Alabama, but his quickest impact is likely off the edge. He looked disruptive during the A-Day scrimmage, and with Kane Wommack looking for impact pass rushers outside of Yhonzae Pierre, the answer might come from a freshman.
3. RB Trae'shawn Brown
Trae'shawn Brown was an afterthought in Alabama's recruiting class. He was a late addition to the class and arrived in Tuscaloosa with meager expectations as a freshman.
Brown was a revelation nonetheless during spring practice. With 5-star EJ Crowell sidelined for most of spring practice, Brown was the youngster making a push for early playing time. Comparing him to Josh Jacobs might provide the Texas native with unrealistic expectations, but he displayed a wiggle that felt reminiscent of the former Tide star.
Alabama has to get more production out of its backfield in 2026. Cracking the RB rotation is wide open for both freshmen, and it wouldn't be a stunner if Brown ends up being part of it.
2. WR Cederian Morgan
Cederian Morgan has consistently earned praise throughout the offseason from both players and coaches. He had an impressive spring, and with the injury to NC State transfer Noah Rogers during the A-Day scrimmage, the door is open for Morgan to snag a starting role on Alabama's offense.
He figures to be battling sophomore Derek Meadows for the role alongside Ryan Coleman-Williams and Lotzeir Brooks. Regardless of the outcome, Morgan has clearly positioned himself for a significant role in his first season in Tuscaloosa.
1. RB EJ Crowell
Even with a soft tissue injury keeping him sidelined for the spring, Crowell still figures to be the freshman with the clearest path to a major role. Crowell is one of the most prolific runners in the history of high school football in this state, and he arrives at Alabama as the most anticipated freshman running back since Najee Harris.
Junior Daniel Hill is likely to be the starter at the beginning of the season, but Crowell will have a chance for a big role right away. Don't be surprised after a few weeks if he ultimately takes the reins and becomes the Crimson Tide's featured back.
