Kalen DeBoer reeled in another elite recruiting class in the 2026 cycle, and several of those players have already positioned themselves for major roles as freshmen.

While Alabama may not have as much room for freshmen contributors this season as it has in recent years, thanks to a much bigger Transfer Portal class than usual along with strong roster retention for the elite 2025 high school class, there are still several players who have positioned themselves for immediate roles.

While others could emerge, these five players are the ones who will almost certainly play a significant role in year one with Alabama.

Kalen DeBoer has no choice but to play these 5 freshman standouts for Alabama

RB Trae'shawn Brown

One of two freshman running backs projected to get legitimate playing time this season, former 3-star Trae'shawn Brown has been a revelation in spring practice and fall camp leading up to his freshman season.

Brown had another strong performance in Thursday's scrimmage, and Kalen DeBoer spoke afterward about the growing confidence in the Texas native. Brown is going to be part of the RB rotation right away, likely competing with junior Kevin Riley for the RB2 spot behind Daniel Hill.

Brown has the explosiveness and contact balance that Alabama has been missing, and he's well on the way to making his recruiting ranking look silly.

RB EJ Crowell

There's more confidence in Brown's ability to contribute immediately simply because EJ Crowell has missed so much practice time. But make no mistake, they are being cautious with the former 5-star because they know exactly what they have.

Crowell is going to be a star, and he's going to make his presence felt this season. It might take a few weeks for everything to click, but when they do: watch out. He's got all the potential in the world, and is still the most talented running back on the roster.

WR Cederian Morgan

4-star WR Cederian Morgan is going to be in the rotation at WR this season. While it's likely that either Rico Scott or Derek Meadows will ultimately start next to Ryan Coleman-Williams and Lotzeir Brooks with Noah Rogers out, Morgan is going to have a role on this team.

Morgan has drawn rave reviews from coaches and teammates, with Brooks recently noting that Morgan can "catch the ball better than anybody I've ever seen."

DeBoer and OC Ryan Grubb will find a way to take advantage of his size and hands during his freshman season.

LB Xavier Griffin

Alabama has been preparing 5-star LB Xavier Griffin to play. He's received a lot of one-on-one attention from DC Kane Wommack in practice, and they've wasted little time getting him ready for his Jihaad Campbell-like role down the line.

While it might be a stretch to believe that Griffin makes an impact as an off-ball LB this year, he's almost certainly going to make an impact off the edge as a designated pass rusher. That's a skill that can help the Crimson Tide immediately as they search for complementary pass rush pieces next to Yhonzae Pierre.

S Jireh Edwards

5-star safety Jireh Edwards has earned a lot of praise in the preseason, and it has become clear that he's going to have some sort of role on this team. It's just tough to see a major role for him due to Alabama's ridiculous depth at his position.

Alabama returned both starters at safety from last season in Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb, and then has three additional safeties who are all ready for increased workloads: Zay Mincey, Ivan Taylor, and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr.

The safety room is the strength of the team, and Wommack is going to have to get creative to get those guys on the field for snaps. That includes Edwards, who is ready to make an impact as a freshman in some capacity.
