5-star WR teases upcoming commitment decision with Alabama confidence waning

Alabama's top remaining target appears to be nearing his decision.

The 2027 recruiting cycle has not been fun for Alabama fans. Kalen DeBoer could redeem that if he can pull off a late miracle.

Alabama's top target throughout the cycle has been 5-star WR Monshun Sales out of Indianapolis. Sales is an Alabama native and grew up a fan of the Crimson Tide, dreaming of one day running out of the tunnel at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

But that's a much lower priority in today's NIL-driven landscape, and despite what looked to be a stellar visit at the end of May, the popular belief among recruiting experts is that Alabama is lagging behind the other contenders.

For DeBoer, there's little time to change the narrative as a decision appears to be imminent for the nation's top receiver. A decision has been expected sometime in July, and Sales teased it on Sunday with a social media post that caused a stir:

Alabama facing an uphill battle to land 5-star WR Monshun Sales

Rivals' Greg Smith clearly doesn't think much of Alabama's chances in the Sales sweepstakes. He penned an article last week titled Indiana leads for 5-star WR Monshun Sales but Texas made its move and Ohio State is lurking

That doesn't lead one to believe that Alabama is viewed as a legitimate contender to land the 5-star WR.

At one point, Alabama was considered the favorite thanks to his childhood allegiances. But that didn't help them in the recruiting of 4-star CB Hayden Stepp, either, who committed to Oregon over Alabama despite growing up a fan of the Crimson Tide.

Alabama has undoubtedly made a competitive offer to Sales, but there's no doubting that the offer they've made lags behind what Indiana, Texas, and Ohio State have put on the table for Sales. That's a frustrating reality for Alabama fans, but the reality nonetheless. DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan aren't going to break the bank and upset the balance of the roster for any one player, even one with the otherworldly ability of Sales.

This recruitment appears to be headed toward what so many in this cycle have been for Tide fans: disappointment.

It's not the end of the world, and the sky is certainly not falling, contrary to what many Debbie Downers and doom-and-gloomers want to believe, but this recruiting cycle has been the exact opposite of what Alabama fans are used to.

That's the new reality of the era, however. Like it or not, DeBoer and his staff have a plan that they are sticking to. Only time will tell if it's the right one.
