  • No. 6 - Ole Miss Rebels (2-0) - As usual, Lane Kiffin has lots of offensive bells and whistles. Austin Simmons and the Rebels were explosive at times against Kentucky, but inconsistent too frequently. A better quarterback could have beaten them in Lexington.
  • No. 5 - LSU Bengal Tigers (2-0) - With Clemson wallowing its way into an ugly win over Troy, the LSU resume took a big hit. LSU did not help itself much in beating Louisiana Tech 23-7. The LSU site Death Valley Voice described the LSU win as "underwhelming" and questioned the strength of LSU's offense.
  • No. 4 - Tennessee Vols (2-0) - The Vols are yet to face serious opposition. That will change in Week 3 with Georgia in Knoxville.
  • No. 3 - Alabama Crimson Tide (1-1) - After the TaIlahassee debacle, I had Alabama at No. 13. Against an inferior foe in ULM, Alabama erased many doubts. The Tide may be on track to living up to preseason expectations. We'll know in two weeks.
  • No. 2 - Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) - Dawn of the Dawg called Saturday's defeat of Austin Peay an "ugly win." The Dawgs have not faced a real team yet, and their play has been uninspiring.
  • No. 1 - Texas Longhorns (1-1) - Arch Manning started out shaky on Saturday, but he and the Horns showed offensive progress against San Jose State, winning 38-7.

All of the SEC's top six teams have much to prove. At this point, as many as nine SEC teams show the potential to become Playoff teams.
