A freshman could make or break Alabama's 2026 title hopes, according to ESPN expert

Though limited this spring, but loaded with potential, ESPN analysts believe five-star true freshman RBs' arrival could tilt Alabama's offense towards national championship ceiling in 2026.

A great running back is a lot like a high-speed train. Sometimes, it may take a moment to get rolling, but once it hits its stride, nothing in its path can stop it. That's exactly what Kalen DeBoer and Alabama football hope five-star true freshman running back EJ Crowell can become in 2026.

Crowell has been limited throughout the spring while recovering from injury and won't suit up for Alabama's A-Day game on Saturday at Saban Field in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Still, the excitement surrounding his potential remains high among Crimson Tide fans and national observers. One of those watchful eyes is ESPN's recruiting coordinator, Billy Tucker, who believes Crowell has all the traits to make an immediate impact in Alabama's offense once he returns this fall.

Tucker envisions Crowell's addition in the backfield as providing the type of physical runner Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm need to lay down the foundational approach they're seeking. And after seeing Crowell rush for over 6,329 total yards and 91 touchdowns over his three-year Jackson High School career, Tucker seems certain that the young tailback has what it takes and more to bring Alabama back to prominence as national championship contenders as early as fall 2026.

Tucker said this on Thursday when featuring Crowell as one of many "top newcomers" roaming the SEC heading into the season.

EJ Crowell projected to be one of the SEC's top newcomers

"Crowell is poised to make an immediate impact and become a foundational piece of Alabama's rushing attack from Day 1," Tucker said. "His sturdy build, exceptional contact balance, and ability to generate yards after contact are precisely what new offensive line coach Adrian Klemm needs to establish a physical identity... Given his elite high school production and mature profile, he has a clear path to earning a significant share of carries and becoming the featured rusher Alabama needs for a rapid return to national championship contention in 2026."

That external praise has been echoed inside the Alabama program as well this spring. DeBoer has already seen enough in early flashes of development to believe Crowell is trending in the right direction.

"EJ has come in and done nothing but grind," DeBoer said. "Since arriving on campus, he's worked day in and day out on improving himself in every way. He's gotten stronger and faster in just a few short months with our strength staff, and we look forward to seeing how that translates to success on the field."

Even with the national buzz already building around him, Crowell's path in 2026 won't be without competition — especially after missing valuable time this spring. Alabama's running back room is loaded with options, and the depth chart is far from settled. Veterans and emerging pieces like Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley, AK Dear, Trae'shawn Brown, and Khalifa Keith have all used spring opportunities to carve out roles in what has become one of the more crowded position groups on the roster.

That's where Crowell's challenge and his ceiling intersect. For DeBoer, the expectation isn't that Crowell will be handed anything. It's that his talent eventually forces its way into the rotation. Still, if Crowell can eventually match the billing that made him the top consensus running back nationally in his 2026 recruiting class, then that ripple effect on Alabama's offense could be immediate and significant. And for a program chasing a return to the top of the college football mountain, a breakout season from Crowell wouldn't just add production—it could be the missing piece that turns Alabama's 2026 offense from promising to championship caliber.
