Numbers can be misleading, especially the claims about how much money is being spent on college football and men's basketball rosters. Nate Oats has been purported to have $12M on the 2026-27 Alabama basketball roster. Some insiders believe the number is closer to $10M, and maybe not quite that much.

Texas head coach Sean Miller recently said that around 20 men's basketball programs have 2026-27 player payroll budgets of $20M or more. Multiple reports claim that some programs at the $20 million (or more) level are Duke, Louisville, Texas, Tennessee, and Florida. It is believed that some players at Tennessee and Florida will earn four to five million dollars in the coming season.

It is not known how much Indiana will pay Aiden Sherrell. What is almost guaranteed is that Nate Oats wanted Sherrell to return, but balked at matching Indiana's offer. UConn's Dan Hurley recently said that a player payroll "north of $14 million" was the minimum required for success. If Hurley is correct, Nate Oats will have to work wonders with less than 'successful' money.

Mark Pope and Kentucky proved last season that throwing money at players is no guarantee of success. The Wildcats are believed to have spent around $22 million on their 2025-26 roster.

In the 'what if' world of Alabama basketball, Nate Oats with $20 million to spend would take the Crimson Tide to its first college basketball national championship. But that is not the real world for Oats. He will continue to challenge by doing more with less. His 'more' might be enough some season.

Along with Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, SEC men's programs expected to outspend the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2026-27 are Texas A&M, Arkansas, and South Carolina. From his history, we know that Will Wade will enthusiastically throw money at players. Perhaps other SEC programs will invest more money in men's basketball than Alabama. As Sean Miller qualified his $20 million or more comment, the closest to credible numbers are "educated guesses."

Good News for Alabama Basketball

Good news for Alabama basketball fans is that Nate Oats will not back off an inch. His expectation for Alabama is to contend for a national championship, and he will demand nothing less of himself, his staff, and his players.
