When Jordan Renaud, Keon Keeley, and Kelby Collins chose to transfer out, edge players became a question mark for the Alabama Crimson Tide. An added loss was a major one, with LT Overton progressing to the NFL.
For the Alabama football defense, the Wolf and Bandit positions are different. Players at Wolf must have quickness and short-distance speed. They are generally lighter than Bandits. The Bandits are basically defensive ends. Every season, Kane Wommack uses some of his players at Wolf and Bandit.
Many January and February assessments of the 2026 Crimson Tide were that Alabama would be 'thin' at the two positions, if not in talent, certainly in experience. An early spring practice take is that Alabama's roster of edge players could become a strength instead of a weakness.
Alabama's jewel on the edge will be Yhonzae Pierre. Kane Wommack also added key players: South Carolina transfers Desmond Umeozulu and Devan Thompkins; freshmen Jamarion Matthews and Xavier Griffen, Malique Franklin, Kamhariyan Johnson, and Nolan Wilson, who will be a summer enrollee; along with returners Justin Hill and Fatutoa Henry. Though not available in the spring, Jah-Marien Latham has playing experience on the outside. Though some Alabama football insiders expect Latham, after his return from injury rehab, to add weight and play inside.
Alabama Crimson Tide Surprise
On Sunday, during the Crimson Tide's first spring session, Jamarion Matthews and Fatutoa Henry were seen in drills with a group of Wolf linebackers. The national recruiting services rated Matthews as a defensive lineman. He was rated by 247 as the No. 6 defensive lineman in the 2026 class. Alabama recruiting insiders had predicted he could play defensive tackle or defensive end for Alabama. Bandit seemed to be the best fit for Matthews, so his first session working with the Wolves was a surprise.
It is too soon to predict what will happen with Matthews and many other players. Being trained at multiple positions is a standard staple of spring work. It would be no surprise if Xavier Griffen also gets work at inside linebacker.
What is clear is that the Alabama Crimson Tide has a large number of good options to rotate at the Wolf and Bandit positions. An improved pass rush is an attainable goal for the Crimson Tide.
