  • No. 4 - Tennessee Vols (2-1) - Last week, No. 4 - The Vols lost a gut-check game in Neyland Stadium in OT, 44-41. After jumping out to an impressive 21-7 lead, Tennessee was not quite tough enough to hold off the Georgia comeback. Tennessee could have and should have won in regulation with a badly missed 43-yard field goal attempt.
  • No. 3 - Alabama Crimson Tide (2-1) - Last week, No. 3 - Ty Simpson was outstanding, throwing for five touchdowns. The Alabama defense continued to improve, though playing against a backup quarterback and a team with no competent or healthy center was not a stern challenge. The Alabama red flag (not crimson) is an offensive line unable to get much push, resulting in an anemic rushing attack.
  • No. 2 - Texas A&M Aggies (3-0) - Last week, No. 8 - Until Saturday night, the Aggies had not played a team of note. That changed with the visit to South Bend to face AP-ranked No. 8, Notre Dame. LSU no longer has the SEC's top out-of-conference win of the season. That distinction belongs to the Aggies, who mounted a late, game-winning drive to beat the Fighting Irish 41-40. An irony that Alabama football fans will not miss is that Tyler Buchner muffed a hold on an extra point, leading to the Aggies' winning margin.
  • No. 1 - Georgia Bulldogs (3-0) - Last week, No. 2 - The Bulldogs have a weakness on the right side of their offensive line, and until Saturday, quarterback Gunner Stockton had not impressed. Stockton grew into his leadership role in a tough road environment. Beating a good Tennessee team in Neyland Stadium is a tall task. To Kirby Smart's credit, the Bulldogs showed the kind of toughness it takes to contend for championships.
