Week 1 of college football is a few games short of completion. Alabama and 14 other SEC teams gained Week 1 wins. Ole Miss is yet to play Louisville.
Despite Alabama's 48-10 win over East Carolina, the Crimson Tide slipped one spot in the ESPN FPI to No. 9. Six other SEC teams also dropped. Ole Miss dropped one spot to No. 15; Tennessee dropped two spots to No. 18. The biggest downward moves were Arkansas, down 13 spots to No. 60; Vanderbilt and Missouri dropped seven spots, with the Commodores at No. 36 and the Tigers at No. 28. Auburn, after escaping with a win over Baylor, dropped five spots to No. 27.
The most significant upward SEC movers were Texas, LSU, and Mississippi State. The Longhorns moved up one spot to gain the new No. 1 in the FPI. LSU's dramatic beatdown of Clemson boosted the Bengal Tigers up two spots and above Alabama at No. 7. Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Florida moved up one spot. The Aggies reached No.11, the Sooners are No. 11, and the Gators are No. 17.
South Carolina and Mississippi State gained big jumps. The Gamecocks moved up seven spots to No. 16. Mississippi State moved up a whopping 16 spots to No. 33.
Two Alabama opponents held steady
The Georgia Bulldogs and the Kentucky Wildcats held steady at No. 5, and No. 40, respectively.
In the long-running 'My dog's bigger than your dog' battle between the SEC and the Big Ten, the SEC holds Week 1 bragging rights. The SEC has the No. 1 team in Texas and 10 teams in the FPI's top 18. The B1G has five teams in the top 18, plus Michigan at No. 20.
Seven FBS teams dropped 20 or more spots in the FPI. Most notable are Clemson, down 23 spots to No. 42, and Rutgers down 29 spots to No. 96 after losing to UMass.
As a predictive ranking, the FPI is sketchy during the early weeks of the season. The rankings start to gain merit in October.
