Alabama basketball is reportedly in contact with a familiar St. John's transfer

But they certainly aren't alone

If you follow the Transfer Portal religiously (would not recommend), then you are probably familiar with the same Joson Sanon.

Sanon was one of the early names linked to Alabama in the Transfer Portal a year ago after his freshman season at Arizona State. After averaging 12 points per game and shooting 37% from three in Tempe, Sanon was one of the hottest names in the portal this time last year.

After initial smoke linked him to Alabama, Rick Pitino and St. John's swooped in and snagged him, instead. Unfortunately for Sanon, things didn't go as planned with the Johnnies. He saw a decreased role, and his numbers went down across the board.

Most concerning, his three-point shooting dipped to 33%, but the Red Storm weren't a very good shooting team overall, and the spacing is much, much different at St. John's than at Alabama.

So it stands to reason, with Sanon back in the portal again, that Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide would show interest again. Especially considering Alabama certainly has a need for a guard with Amari Allen testing the NBA Draft waters, Labaron Philon and Latrell Wrightsell gone, and the uncertain future of Aden Holloway.

But despite the difficult season Sanon had in the Big Apple, he's still a highly coveted player, as evidenced by the long list of suitors who have reached out to him:

Alabama could circle back on Joson Sanon this Transfer Portal cycle

If Sanon is bag chasing this offseason again, he's not going to end up in Tuscaloosa.

If he's serious about going somewhere that he can develop and that fits him stylistically, then Alabama could be the ultimate landing spot for the St. John's transfer.

It's not known if Alabama's interest in Sanon has gone beyond surface-level contact. Oats and Preston Murphy reach out to a lot of players to gauge particulars, and most conversations don't make it past the initial contact.

Transferring to Alabama could be a bit of a gamble for Sanon, as there isn't a guaranteed big role available, particularly if both Holloway and Allen are back. He'd come off the bench at best and be competing with talented incoming freshmen Qayden Samuels, Jaxon Richardson, and Tarris Bouie for playing time.

If Sanon is willing to come in and compete, he's the exact type of upside swing that would make sense for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama has two roster spots available to play with right now. That number could be three if Allen stays in the draft, but his spot will remain open until he makes that decision official.
