Alabama beats out blue bloods as 4-star RB cites one key factor in commitment

From all reports, Alabama's biggest recruiting weekend of the summer has gone splendidly, even if it hasn't produced a rush of commitments. Some of the top targets the Crimson Tide is pursuing will take all of their visits, even if they've got a pretty good idea that they're going to end up in Tuscaloosa.

We saw that last year with guys like EJ Crowell, Cederian Morgan, Xavier Griffin, and Nolan Wilson, among others.

But if you were jonesing for a commitment and didn't want to wait through the summer process, Kalen DeBoer obliged on Sunday.

4-star RB Nigel Newkirk of Gainesville High School in Georgia, the same program that produced Tide signees Xavier Griffin and Jamarion Matthews in the 2026 class, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Sunday afternoon to cap his official visit to Tuscaloosa:

4-star RB Nigel Newkirk commits to Alabama over LSU, Ohio State, and Michigan

"Just the love I get around the building, and I already know everybody. Coach (Robert) Gillespie has always been like a second father. It's a great city, too. Great fans. There is nothing to hate about Tuscaloosa," Newkirk told 247's Brett Greenberg about his decision to commit to Alabama.

Alabama has long been seen as the leader for Newkirk, picking up recent predictions to ultimately land Newkirk. He originally planned to commit on July 1st after all of his official visits, with trips lined up to LSU, Ohio State, and Michigan after this weekend in Tuscaloosa.

Instead, he pulled the trigger on a commitment earlier than planned, and now Alabama has added another serious talent to its RB room.

Newkirk suffered an injury in the playoffs last season, but he had a fantastic junior season up until that point, piling up just shy of 1500 yards with 19 touchdowns on over eight yards per carry. At 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, he's a compact-style runner with a low center of gravity. His contact balance makes him difficult to bring down in the open field.

Alabama is looking to take two running backs in the 2027 cycle. DeBoer and company have had four targets in mind, and Newkirk is the first to jump on board.

Alabama sits in a good spot with 3-star Tai Phillips, who is a good bet to be the second RB in this class, though the Crimson Tide is expected to receive visits from Trey Martin and Kingston Miles in June.

With Newkirk on board, it could be first-come, first-served for whichever of the trio Alabama is pursuing who wants to commit first.

Newkirk is the seventh commitment to join the Alabama class. All signs point toward the Crimson Tide taking a smaller class this cycle, so that number could already represent around half of the high school prospects DeBoer and company intend to take. Spots are filling up, which increases the urgency for the other targets on Alabama's board.
