Using a position group comparison to predict the winner of Alabama vs. Georgia is problematic. In the nine position groups typically used in position group comparisons, there are four 'slight-edge' comparisons: two for the Bulldogs and two for the Crimson Tide.
Though weather forecasts predict the storm will be well past Tuscaloosa by game time, rain and wind could still be factors. Friday midday predictions call for a chance of light rain and winds not exceeding 10 miles per hour during the game. Heavier rain and stronger winds might hamper some of the Crimson Tide's strengths.
The Bryant-Denny crowd will be frenzied, even in light rain. Typically, the home crowd would help the Crimson Tide by about 3.5 points. But the Bulldogs are not a typical team.
Alabama and Georgia Position Groups
- Quarterback - Choosing a six-game starter over a QB who has been a winner since the end of the 2024 season, when he came on in relief of Carson Beck, is borderline crazy. Plus, Gunner Stockton is playing the best football of his career. Yet, Keelon is already special, giving the Crimson Tide a Slight Edge
- Running Back - Chauncey Bowens is out for Georgia. Recent rumblings speculate that Nate Frazier isn't 100%. Advantage: Alabama
- Wide Receiver - Advantage: Alabama
- Tight End - Advantage: Georgia, though Bama's tight ends as run-blockers come close to making this even
- Offensive Line - Advantage: Georgia - Alabama's O-line is much improved, but Georgia's Drew Bobo (and Stockton) will not falter in the hostile road environment
- Defensive Line - Advantage: Alabama - Even with its injured players, Bama's D-line depth gives it an edge
- Linebacker - Slight Edge: Georgia - Chris Cole and Raylen Wilson are outstanding for Georgia. But the Dawgs don't have an equal to Yhonzae Pierre, and Xavier Griffin's sudden emergence almost gets the comparison even.
- Defensive Backs - Both teams are loaded with talent in the secondary. Alabama's talent has not performed as consistently as Georgia's. - Slight Edge: Georgia
- Special Teams - Kicking is not a problem for either team. The teams are even in kick and punt returns, but Alabama has the better kick and punt coverage team. - Slight Edge: Alabama
If these position-group ratings are accurate, with no heavy rain or strong winds, Alabama should win a close contest.
