Alabama Crimson Tide news and notes from the week so far:
Hurricane Isaias could have a major impact on Alabama-Georgia this weekend
The tropical system in the Gulf is expected to develop into Hurricane Isaias as it makes landfall, and it could have a major impact on this weekend's matchup between Alabama and Georgia in Tuscaloosa. At the very least, rain and wind will likely be present and make the highly anticipated matchup a sloppy mess.
More clarification should come today, but James Spann mentioned on Tuesday that postponement could ultimately be an option. There is past precedent from hurricanes in the past of a game even being moved, but it's highly unlikely that Alabama would agree to move the game to Athens and lose the revenue from a home game this year.
I would expect the game to be played, and played in Tuscaloosa. It just might be played in a rainstorm.
JUCO Edge Hayden Lowe, a former Top 100 recruit, will visit Alabama on October 24
Alabama has joined the race for top JUCO edge Hayden Lowe. The former Top 100 recruit signed with Miami out of high school before transferring away after a single season and spending this season at a junior college in California.
Plenty of others are pursuing him, including rival Tennessee, but Alabama is in the thick of the race. Lowe has set up an official visit to Alabama on October 24th for the Crimson Tide's matchup against Texas A&M.
Ryan Grubb discusses the usage of star freshman RB EJ Crowell
Alabama OC Ryan Grubb was asked about star freshman EJ Crowell's usage so far this season, particularly in the aftermath of getting just three carries in Alabama's 33-point blowout win over Mississippi State.
He turned those three carries into 49 yards, including one explosive run. His performance had Alabama fans curious as to why he isn't playing more. Grubb explained why on Monday:
"He's still growing into the game plans," Grubb said. "There's parts that are difficult at times to have him on the field when he doesn't have the whole offense down. But he's getting there, and he's fighting his tail off to learn. ... He's wildly effective when the ball is in his hands."
Todd McShay raves about Alabama QB Keelon Russell
NFL Draft guru Todd McShay dolled out significant praise for Alabama QB Keelon Russell on his podcast this week. Russell is generating a ton of buzz already in NFL Draft circles despite not being eligible for the draft until 2028.
Russell looks like the potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2028 draft cycle after just five starts. McShay is ready to take it a step further:
“I’ve given one 99 grade in my entire career," McShay said. "That was Andrew Luck. Keelon Russell is the first one where I’m like, that guy’s on a trajectory, in modern football, in today’s NFL, to get the only other grade of 99.”
Aden Holloway is back with Alabama basketball, but will serve a two-game suspension
Alabama finally provided clarity on star senior guard Aden Holloway - and dropped the roster on the website - on Tuesday. Holloway is officially back with the Crimson Tide after completing the second-chance program and having his felony charges dropped.
Holloway's return comes with one caveat: he will serve a suspension for the first two games of the regular season as well as all three of the Crimson Tide's exhibition games, starting with Thursday night against Furman.
The two regular-season games that Holloway will miss are against Sam Houston (11/3) and Arkansas State (11/6).
