Alabama Crimson Tide news and notes from Friday, 2/21/25
Baseball remains unbeaten with wacky 9-2 win over Coastal Carolina
Alabama baseball stayed undefeated, moving to 6-0 on the season by beating Coastal Carolina 9-2 in their first game of the Jax Baseball Classic in Jacksonville, Florida. The Crimson Tide managed nine runs despite only mustering three hits. They did their damage by drawing an absurd 12 walks against Chanticleers pitching and took advantage of opportunities with runners in scoring position.
Leading just 2-1, Alabama used a five-run fifth inning to break the game open. A two-RBI single by Brennen Norton got the scoring started in the fifth. Kade Snell, Richie Bonomolo Jr., and Bryce Fowler all drew RBI walks in the fifth to push the Crimson Tide lead to 7-1.
Alabama got a good start from Zane Adams. He pitched 4.1 innings and gave up two hits and one run, walking three, and striking out six. The bullpen held the lead with Braylon Myers tossing a couple of scoreless innings to end the game.
Next up for Alabama is the biggest test of the season to date against No. 12 NC State at 3 pm CT on Saturday.
Softball splits double-header to open Easton Bama Bash
Alabama softball faced a double-header on Friday to open the Easton Bama Bash and split their two contests to move to 7-6 on the season. As has been the case too often for the past two seasons, the Tide's bats went silent in the opener against Virginia Tech.
Alabama managed just five hits and one run, wasting a good afternoon of pitching between Jocelyn Briski and Catelyn Riley.
The bats woke up in game two, a 9-1 win over Southern Utah. Kennedy Marceaux hammered a three-run homer in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. A pinch-hit, two-run single by Kendal Clark added some insurance in the sixth and Alabama ended the game via run-rule later in the inning following an RBI single by Abby Duchscherer.
Alabama faces Drake in a double-header on Saturday before getting another crack at Virginia Tech on Sunday.
Gymnastics suffers historic loss to rival Auburn
Things have not been the same for Alabama gymnastics since Sarah Patterson retired. On Friday night, it may have hit rock-bottom. Auburn came into Coleman Coliseum and beat Alabama 197.750-197.350. It was the first ever win for the Tigers over the Crimson Tide in Coleman.
Gymnastics is now 0-6 in the SEC on the season and a long way from the elite program it once was.
