Alabama Crimson Tide news and notes from the weekend:
Alabama snaps two-game losing streak with 31-20 win over Texas A&M
A beaten and battered Alabama team with a CVS receipt of an injury report found a way to beat Texas A&M at home on Saturday to snap a two-game losing streak. The Crimson Tide trailed 20-17 to begin the fourth quarter, but two Keelon Russell touchdown passes led Alabama to a 14-0 final frame and a 31-20 win.
Russell threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, pacing an offense that mustered very little on the ground for the second week in a row without starting center Racin Delgatty. An injury to Will Sanders exacerbated things as third-string LG Kaden Strayhorn had to fill in.
Injuries have piled up for this team, and the bye week is coming at a much-needed time. Alabama should get most of its guys back before traveling to Baton Rouge to face LSU on November 7th in a game with massive College Football Playoff implications.
At 6-2, the only guaranteed path to the playoff for Alabama would be winning the final four regular-season games. Finding a way to win in Death Valley will be difficult, but a healthier Tide team should look more like the one we saw during the first five games of the season and less like the wounded version we've seen the last couple of weeks.
Alabama moves back into the AP Top 10 after beating Texas A&M
Another chaotic and upset-riddled weekend of college football saw more major shakeups in the polls. This week, it worked to Alabama's advantage. The win over Texas A&M, coupled with some upsets of teams ranked above them, allowed the Crimson Tide to jump from No. 13 back into the Top 10 at No. 10 heading into the bye week.
Alabama is the highest-ranked two-loss team, which could bode well if there is further chaos down the stretch run of the regular season. That could open the door for a three-loss team or two to make the College Football Playoff this season, and the Tide could be in position be among that group.
Of course, they could just win out and avoid worrying about the playoff bubble. That would be preferable.
Alabama baseball defeats UAB 14-8 in 14-inning exhibition
Rob Vaughn and Alabama baseball finished their fall exhibition schedule over the weekend by defeating UAB 14-8 in a 14-inning game in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide produced 22 hits and struck out 20 Blazers batters in the effort.
Freshman Bubba Coleman smoked a three-run home run to highlight the offensive output for Alabama.
Alabama softball wins two on Sunday on the road
Alabama softball traveled to Fulton, Mississippi, on Sunday to play an afternoon doubleheader against Southern Miss and Itawamba Community College, earning wins over both.
The Tide defeated Southern Miss 4-3 and then Itawamba 4-2 to earn a perfect 2-0 mark on the road. Transfer Noelani Livingstone paced the offensive effort in both games, combining to go 4-of-5 with a triple, a double, and two singles.
Jocelyn Briski threw a nearly perfect three innings, striking out eight. Kaitlyn Pallozzi came on for relierf against Southern Miss, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits in a close game.
Alabama will finish its fall ball slate on November 13th against Auburn in Tuscaloosa.
