At 4-0, Alabama is one of only five undefeated SEC football teams. After slipping one spot last week in the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI), the Crimson Tide regained that spot by beating South Carolina. In the FPI, the Crimson Tide is the SEC's third-highest-ranked team at No. 6.
Saturday morning in Week 5, the SEC will lose another unbeaten team as the Crimson Tide takes on much-improved Mississippi State in Starkville.
The FPI's Week 4 rankings again showed the SEC's strength. The conference has five of college football's top 10 teams.
Alabama and other SEC upward movers
After moving up two spots, the Georgia Bulldogs are now the FPI's No. 1 team. The SEC's biggest mover was 2-2 Arkansas. After beating Tulsa 34-6, the Razorbacks moved up 14 spots to No. 60. Florida surged up with the Gators' 52-28 win over Ole Miss. Jon Sumrall's team moved up six spots in the FPI to No. 10. Staying on an upward trajectory, 4-0 Mississippi State moved up two spots to No. 40. In Starkville, the Bulldogs beat Missouri 34-28.
The biggest SEC mover down was Vanderbilt. After losing to Auburn, the Commodores dropped eight spots to No. 51. Georgia humbled Oklahoma in a 41-13 win, causing the 2-2 Sooners to drop seven spots to No. 21. Ole Miss received a reality check in Gainesville, causing the Rebels to drop six spots to No. 19. South Carolina's loss to the Crimson Tide dropped the Gamecocks six spots to No. 33. Texas A&M fell to 0-2 in SEC play after losing badly to LSU. The Aggies dropped five spots to No. 16. The Missouri Tigers fell three spots to No. 35.
After slipping by Tennessee 20-17 in Knoxville, the Texas Longhorns fell two spots to No. 4. The Vols dropped one spot to No. 11.
SEC teams holding firm in the FPI were LSU at No. 8, Auburn at No. 24, and Kentucky at No. 36.
Alabama's Strength of Schedule (SOS of played games) did not get much of a boost, moving up to No. 46. Only four SEC teams have a weaker SOS than the Crimson Tide: Mississippi State No. 48, Missouri No. 62, Vanderbilt No. 71, and Georgia No. 88.
