Alabama football fans not happy with Week 2 CFB Playoff Rankings
By Ronald Evans
No. 3 - Texas Longhorns; 8-1 Record
Jeff Sagarin ranks the Texas SOS at No. 47. The best wins for the Longhorns are over 5-5 Michigan, 5-5 Oklahoma, and 6-4 Vanderbilt. The Horns have zero wins over Playoff-ranked teams.
No. 4 - Penn State Nittany Lions; 8-1 Record
PSU has a SOS of No. 33. The best wins for the Nittany Lions are over 6-3 Illinois and 5-4 Wisconsin; neither team is ranked in the CFB Playoff Top 25.
No. 5 - Indiana Hoosiers; 10-0 Record
Rewarding the Hoosiers for being undefeated makes sense. Unless, after they lose at Ohio State, they are given only a slight dip in the rankings. IU has a current SOS of No. 76. The best IU wins are over 5-4 Nebraska, 5-5 Michigan, and 5-5 Washington. None of the three are ranked in the CFB Playoff Top 25.
No. 8 - Notre Dame Fighting Irish; 8-1 Record
The Fighting Irish have two resume-building wins over Playoff-ranked, No. 15, Texas A&M and No. 19, Louisville. Even with those teams on the Irish schedule, Notre Dame's SOS is an unimpressive No. 66. More disqualifying is Notre Dame's loss to Northern Illinois. Since that upset, Northern Illinois is 3-4, including losses to Buffalo, Toledo, and Ball State. At No. 8, the Fighting Irish are way overrated.
No. 9 - Miami Hurricanes; 9-1 Record
The Canes have a credible away game win over No. 19 Louisville and a win over unranked, 7-3 Duke. The one loss was to a much-improved Georgia Tech team that is 6-4. The Miami SOS is No. 56.
Alabama football fans may think like some Georgia and Tennessee fans
The real concern in the minds of Alabama football fans is seeding. Based on current records, do all of Miami, Notre Dame, Indiana, Penn State, and Texas deserve a higher seeding than the Crimson Tide? Plenty of Tennessee and Georgia fans may agree with Alabama fans that their teams would have little problem beating three or four of the currently higher-ranked teams. Hopefully, it will take Playoff, away game wins to prove it.
